our date with lichtenstein :: inspiration excursions

creative trips have been something my friends and i have become really great at lately. we plan dates that revolve around indie movies, sketching at starbucks, electronic concerts and museum visits. i met up with one of my dearest friends, christina, who is both a fashion design student and a painter, for an inspiration date last week.

i have to admit, i have never been a fan of lichtenstein's work but i was really surprised at the insane amount of buzz and press the exhibit {at the art institute} had been receiving. i am conflicted when it comes to modern art that exists solely because of transforming an already existing piece of art. nevertheless, christina and i decided to see what it was all about.

i was actually pleasantly surprised by his body of work. there were only about a dozen of his characteristic 'comic book' pieces and the rest were ones i had never seen before. i loved seeing his earlier work that really tried to conform into the styles that were popular during that time. there also was a small room that houses all of his drawings, notes and ideas. it was probably one of my favorite parts of the exhibit. some of the images above are from that room.

if you ever go to a museum and are offered it, i highly recommend doing so. i even pay for it. you learn so much more about the pieces you are viewing. sometimes, as in the case of the lichtenstein exhibit, you even have the luck of hearing actual artist commentary.

the artist commentary was very fun. lichtenstein is so unpretentious about his work and art in general that it was really refreshing to hear. he's very dry, a bit sarcastic and pokes fun at the art world.

all in all, i might not want a piece of his work in my house but i can appreciate it - especially his technique for printing all those dots - as well as liking him as a person in the art community.

*as you may be able to tell from the pictures above, i have a slight obsession with photographing people who are viewing art. i like seeing the way they react to certain pieces. like that adorable man taking photographs of the engagement//proposal piece; his watch and shirt coordinated so perfectly. i also loved this older couple sitting there right in front of one of his pieces. i also snapped a few of an older gentleman in a knee brace who seemed so excited about all of the pieces. he was awesome. he would talk to himself about it and come and ask christina and i questions about pieces. i wish more people would display their enthusiasm as well as he did. sorry that i didn't share any pictures of him here.
